Lock Bumping - Protect Whats Importent.
Lock bumping is the term for a very common technique used to open pin
tumbler style locks that are installed in over 90% of homes and businesses worldwide. A specially designed
key known as a bump key is all it takes to open virtually any lock of it's
type.
The Lock bump key (also referred to as a '999' key) is easily produced by
simply filing down the points on a blank key or any other key designed to fit in the key hole of a
particular style of lock. The points are filed to the lowest depth in each groove and very small ridges
or elevations are left between the grooves, if the points remain too steep, the key will not enter or
exit the locks key hole. The tip of the key as well as the shoulder of the key must also be filed down by
about one millimeter.
Lock Bumping
Technique - very little skill is needed to master the
technique of bumping locks, It's simply a matter of inserting the bump key into the key way of the selected
lock and tapping the head of the key a couple of times with a small mallet, screw driver handle or
something similar, while applying a turning motion to the key. Some locks can even bumped with a simple
flick of a finger on the head of the key. The skill level required to open most locks with the lock
bumping method is so minute compared to other lock picking methods that just about anyone including
children can open just about any lock.
How Lock Bumping
works - When the shoulder and tip of the key have been removed it
enables the key to be pushed deeper into the lock,. the bottom internal pins of the lock are forced
upwards because of the slight elevations or points that were left standing on the key. Each of the bottom
pins will transfer this upward motion to the next pin sitting immediately on top of it. The top pins are
then forced upwards while the bottom pins remain in place. (The same effect is occurs in a game of
croquette when you hit one ball with tour mallet that is touching another ball only the second ball
moves) As the top pins are separated from the bottom pins, the key cylinder can then be turned and
the lock is will now open.
Preventing Lock
Bumping - It's Ironic that more sophisticated
manufacturing processes are in fact producing locks with cylinders that are actually easier to Bump
because the pins are designed to move more freely and smoothly which is ideal conditions for lock
bumping. Also these more sophisticated locks are often manufactured with hardened steel which make
them less susceptible to damages that might otherwise occur on a cheaper lock causing it to jam
and remain locked.
GreenTech High security Multi Point Locks can not be compromised with the
bumping technique, as well as our restricted or registered key profiles because the correct key-blanks
cannot be legally obtained without permission or proper registration with an accredited locksmith
association.
